Trump’s Job Rating Drops as Public Disapproves of Key Policies Nearing 100 Days

As President Trump approaches 100 days in office, his job approval stands at 40%, down from 47% in February. Disapproval for key policies, including tariffs and government cuts, has risen. A large majority of Americans believe the Trump administration should comply with federal court rulings. The findings reveal a split in public perception along party lines, with significant discontent from Democrats and strong support from Republicans.

As President Donald Trump approaches the 100-day mark of his second term, recent polling data reveals a dip in his job approval rating. As of now, just 40% of Americans express approval of his performance, falling 7 percentage points from February. While he still has robust support from his core base, public sentiment about his major policy decisions appears to be waning. In fact, the Pew Research Center reports that 59% of Americans disapprove of the administration’s tariff increases, with only 39% in favor.

In addition, the cuts to federal agencies are viewed unfavorably by 55% of respondents, compared to a slim 44% who approve of these measures. Another point of contention is Trump’s executive actions; a majority—51% of U.S. adults—feel he is overusing executive orders, while only about a quarter believe he is using them appropriately. This poll was taken soon after Trump announced broad new tariffs on nearly all U.S. trading partners, which triggered significant instability in stock markets.

Legal challenges loom over many of Trump’s actions, and there’s a shared bipartisan sentiment among the American public that the administration should halt any actions deemed illegal by federal courts. A big 78% of participants agree that the Trump administration must comply with federal court rulings, which rises to 88% for rulings made by the Supreme Court. This view spans across party lines, with 91% of Democrats and 65% of Republicans supporting this notion when it comes to federal court decisions.

Despite the overarching disapproval, there remains strong support among Republicans for Trump’s job performance and policies. For instance, approval among Republicans stands at 75% regarding his overall job performance, and 78% support the government cuts. However, Democrats express an overwhelming discontent, with about 93% disapproving of Trump’s performance and nearly 90% against his tariff policies.

When compared to former presidents, Trump’s current 40% approval rating is relatively similar to his standing at this point in his first term, trailing behind other presidents like Joe Biden, who started at 59% approval just two years ago. Only Bill Clinton recorded a lower approval rating at this stage in his presidency, which has sparked comparisons and discussions in political circles.

Using open-ended questions from the survey, the Pew Research Center sought insight into what Americans view as Trump’s most significant accomplishments and shortcomings. The immigration policies stand out, with 20% acknowledging them as the administration’s strong point; however, another 11% view those same actions negatively. Interestingly, Trump’s governing style was noted by 22% of respondents as a negative, pointing to perceived carelessness or authoritarian tendencies.

Moreover, when it comes to economic outlook, there’s a noticeable shift in opinions. While general evaluations of the economy haven’t significantly changed since February, there’s a growing belief that the economy will worsen in the coming year—rising from 37% to 45%. Confidence in Trump’s economic decision-making has also dwindled to 45%, his lowest score in years, yet it’s still notably higher than President Biden’s ratings during his time in office.

Public sentiment about Trump’s international policies shows that half of Americans perceive his administration as diminishing U.S. global standing, while roughly 38% believe it strengthens the country. On the political party front, favorable views of the GOP have seen an uptick, with 43% expressing approval, whereas the Democratic Party’s favorability remains stagnant at 38%. All these findings point to a challenging political landscape for Trump and underscore the ongoing division in American political sentiments.

In summary, President Trump’s job rating is currently at 40%, marking a significant drop in approval as he nears the 100-day mark of his second term. Majorities across both parties believe he should comply with court rulings, and his key policies, especially tariffs and cuts to government agencies, face considerable disapproval. While his core supporters remain intact, broader public opinion appears critical, highlighting ongoing divisions in American politics and public sentiment regarding his administration.
