Ronald Reagan’s declaration in his 1981 Inaugural Address that “government is the problem” is not just wrong; it’s dangerously naive. Government can indeed be cumbersome and misguided, but it also plays a crucial role as a stabilizing force against capitalism’s potential excesses. In contrast, Donald Trump’s approach seems intent on dismantling the very institutions that uphold our sense of safety—from the courts to the military and beyond. This undermining of trust is unsettling, and we need leadership that recognizes the vital role these institutions play.

Speaking of the military, it epitomizes the essence of citizenship. Serving in the armed forces demands individuals to prioritize the collective good over personal interests. Yet, Trump’s disparagement of service members as “suckers” reveals an alarming disconnect from the principles of sacrifice and service vital to a healthy democracy. A leader must embody these principles, and sadly, Trump appears to lack that understanding.

So, as I consider my vote, it’s Ms. Harris’s ability to foster stability, promote unity, and project optimism that resonates with my conservative sensibilities. In this era of fragmentation, we need someone who can affirm the importance of civility and democracy, and for me, that candidate is Kamala Harris.
